The “Hammer Uncle,” covered in tattoos and hailed as a hero on the internet, was actually a “skilled thief” being tracked by police. Locals question the petition for leniency, stating, “The high school students involved weren’t a motorcycle gang.”
How did a violent criminal become a hero? Teruyuki Takabayashi (44), dubbed “Hammer Uncle,” was indicted for assault after attacking high school students hanging out in front of his house during Golden Week with a hammer. Immediately after the incident, people online defended him as a “hero who purged a biker gang” and even started a petition for his leniency. However, locals unanimously say, “The students he attacked weren’t a biker gang.” Furthermore, his third arrest is for a crime far from heroic.
Regarding the man arrested for attacking high schoolers with a hammer in Fussa, Tokyo, the Metropolitan Police Department has re-arrested him for breaking into a recycling shop in Tachikawa City this past February and stealing brand-name bags worth approximately 3.4 million yen.
Man indicted for assaulting high school boy with a hammer… re-arrested on new charges.
The man re-arrested is Teruyuki Takabayashi (44). He is suspected of breaking into a recycling shop in Tachikawa City this February and stealing 9 items, including high-end brand bags, worth about 3.4 million yen.
Takabayashi was previously indicted for assault after allegedly attacking a high school boy with a hammer in Fussa City this April, causing serious injury. Police say the car used in his escape was the same one used during the theft at the recycling shop in Tachikawa City.
Takabayashi allegedly broke into the shop after closing time by breaking a window at the back of the store.
Security footage caught the same car in a December theft.
The Metropolitan Police Department is investigating the connection, as the same car was spotted on security cameras near the scene of another theft at a different shop in Tachikawa City last December.

If the police had done their jobs sooner,
the hammer incident wouldn’t have happened.
