[Bear Sighting] 4 hikers rescued by police helicopter after encountering a 1.5m bear on Mt. Tomuraushi, Hokkaido, and getting stranded.
July 5, 2026 (Sun) 11:21
On the afternoon of the 4th, hikers on Mt. Tomuraushi (2,141m altitude), which straddles Biei and Shintoku in Hokkaido, were unable to descend after encountering a bear and had to be rescued by a police helicopter.
According to police, around 2:30 PM on the 4th, a man in his 60s from Obihiro who was descending the mountain spotted a bear about 1.5 meters long near “Mae-Tomu-Daira” at an altitude of 1,724m.
The bear was about 50 to 60 meters in front of the man, leaving him unable to move. He was then joined by a group of three other hikers—a man and two women aged 43 to 52—from Fukuoka and Saga Prefectures who were also descending.

Descending is such a drag. Should I just pretend there’s a bear and call a helicopter?

You went hiking knowing you couldn’t take on a bear? How reckless.

Brown bears are terrifying.

Don’t kill the cub! Hey, you hunters!

I thought you meant the bear died standing up.

With all this news about bear sightings, why are you still going to the mountains? Charge them for the full rescue cost or arrest them.

It’s only 1.5 meters, just fight it and you’ll win.

Please tell me how you’d manage to win a fight like that.

So if you get tired, you can just call a chopper for a free ride home like this?
24: Unknown Japuzz Watcher 2026/07/05(Sun) 15:26:35.95 ID:4mdwZ+7/0
What were you planning to do if the helicopter hadn’t come? Do you expect the police to risk their lives for you?

Don’t call a helicopter just for a bear.

Crazy Climber.

That innocent brown bear was almost shot dead.

They should’ve live-streamed themselves getting eaten.
48: Unknown Japuzz Watcher 2026/07/05(Sun) 15:47:26.98 ID:smOxq0950
Why even go there when you know there are bears?
51: Unknown Japuzz Watcher 2026/07/05(Sun) 15:49:22.35 ID:hjEh4kbO0
Well, glad they’re safe anyway.

Mt. Tomuraushi? More like “Mt. Mourning” (Pun intended).

If you’re going to get stranded just because you saw a bear, don’t climb the mountain in the first place.

Even Montbell can’t help you against a bear.

Glad they didn’t end up like the Fukuoka University Wonder Vogel club.

A helicopter… I wonder how much that cost?

After all that whining about “let us climb the mountain,” this is what happens. Must’ve rotted their brains from the low oxygen lol.

A waste of taxpayer money.

Send them a bill for 1 million yen in travel expenses.

There are plenty of detailed wikis and documentaries about the Mt. Tomuraushi tragedy and the Fukuoka University Wandervogel club, and they’re more interesting than any cheap novel.

Just run away as fast as you can.

Calling the police just for being stuck? They probably should’ve been recovering a corpse instead.

Why are you climbing a mountain where brown bears live?
106: Unknown Japuzz Watcher 2026/07/05(Sun) 17:05:24.00 ID:KesDTQrq0
You’re hiking knowing the risk of bears, so they should definitely make you pay for the rescue.

Japan is crawling with bears. Aren’t they more dangerous than hippos or lions in Africa?
122: Unknown Japuzz Watcher 2026/07/05(Sun) 17:34:39.11 ID:Zfh4ffnh0
I met Mr. Bear.

Close the mountain.

That’s the place famous for those “Slow Tragedy” videos.

They made the right choice. The bear was probably just waiting for its “delivery” to walk down.

Please make all mountain rescue services paid. It’s a joke that we’re using tax money to save tourists who decide to wander into brown bear habitats.
