This year marks the 40th anniversary of the release of “Hello Dracula”.
In the 1980s, “Hopping Vampire” (Jiangshi) movies became a massive horror-comedy phenomenon. Originating from the Hong Kong “Mr. Vampire” series, the Taiwanese-produced “Hello Dracula” series became a huge hit in Japan. At the time, children all over Japan could be seen mimicking these hopping vampires by holding their arms out in front of them.
Supporting this popularity was Shadow Liu, who played the beautiful little Taoist priest, Tenten, at the age of seven. Now 47, she reflects on those days as we hit the 40th anniversary of the series’ first film.

“Mr. Vampire” felt like Kung Fu + Horror. Splatter horror was a fad back then, and then “Hello Dracula” made vampires a huge hit among elementary school kids.
