The Japanese Society for Rights of Authors, Composers and Publishers (JASRAC) has issued guidelines for generative AI works, stating that while songs with both lyrics and music created by AI will not be managed, songs where either the lyrics or the music are AI-generated while the other part is created by a human will be managed only for the human-created portion.

According to the guidelines, music or lyrics autonomously generated by AI based on simple prompts, where no human has contributed to the creation, do not qualify as copyrighted works and are therefore outside the scope of JASRAC’s management.

Typical money-grubbing JASRAC.

Shut up and get lost.

Only the creator knows whether AI was used or not, right?

JASRAC, acting like Gian (the neighborhood bully) again, managing whatever they want.

Look up how it works.

Actually, I’m surprised they *don’t* manage songs where both lyrics and music are by AI.
At this rate, isn’t that all that will be left?

11: Unknown Japuzz Watcher 2026/06/11(Thu) 16:25:57.57 ID:NUP3zN+K0
It’s because they don’t value their customers.

17: Unknown Japuzz Watcher 2026/06/11(Thu) 16:29:46.99 ID:+Mt0S6Bs0
They shouldn’t be managing the music if AI composed it.
They should only be able to manage the lyrics.

18: Unknown Japuzz Watcher 2026/06/11(Thu) 16:30:15.81 ID:50DTiLdm0
How are they going to judge if it was made by AI or not?
Is there an “AI-ness” to it like there is with art or writing?

Even humming will require a permit soon.

Dystopia! Dystopia!

That AI-made reggae version of Moonlight Densetsu was hilarious LOL.

26: Unknown Japuzz Watcher 2026/06/11(Thu) 16:32:51.43 ID:Xd+miZbI0
That’s fine, but what do you mean they “haven’t been paying music usage fees to singers until now”?

27: Unknown Japuzz Watcher 2026/06/11(Thu) 16:33:00.27 ID:EGdyjbcD0
Just trying to snatch up anything humans could have copyright over, huh?

Unlike with art,
if you transcribe an AI-made song by ear and program it yourself, no one would ever know.

Just let AI handle all the songs and lyrics already.
If you can’t perform live, you’re not an artist anyway.

Songs made by AI should belong to the people who made the AI.

Classic Kasurac (JASRAC).

50: Unknown Japuzz Watcher 2026/06/11(Thu) 16:38:39.44 ID:WNsyFR7c0
Once again, JASRAC is attracted to the scent of money.

Business as usual.

61: Unknown Japuzz Watcher 2026/06/11(Thu) 16:43:14.73 ID:x0u4JF2i0
They don’t manage it on their own;
this is just the criteria for when a rights holder applies.

62: Unknown Japuzz Watcher 2026/06/11(Thu) 16:44:03.35 ID:VRO6VnfN0
Haven’t heard the name JASRAC in a while.
Thanks to these guys, I’ve stopped spending money on music, whether that’s a good thing or bad.

If you don’t want it managed, just do both with AI, I guess.

If you don’t want it managed, don’t entrust it to them.
These guidelines are for those who want to entrust it.

It’d be better if they didn’t recognize AI at all, that would increase freedom.
When it comes to music, copyright infringement shouldn’t be recognized unless it’s a direct copy.

(・∀・;) 9.5% management fee.

93: Unknown Japuzz Watcher 2026/06/11(Thu) 17:00:17.75 ID:kqBTAi6y0
Even if you join JASRAC, doesn’t the easy money just go to the top-selling artists?

96: Unknown Japuzz Watcher 2026/06/11(Thu) 17:00:56.60 ID:X8sfqpy70
“We’ll manage it for you, so give us money! Give us money! Money! Money! Money!”

If an AI applies, I bet they’d accept it anyway.

103: Unknown Japuzz Watcher 2026/06/11(Thu) 17:03:29.71 ID:40ItJWnu0
What was that, Kasurac, who even tried to take money from piano schools?

104: Unknown Japuzz Watcher 2026/06/11(Thu) 17:04:48.34 ID:XC3YE4Tz0
JASRAC *does* take money from piano schools.
It’s only natural if managed music is being used.

Who do they think they are?

133: Unknown Japuzz Watcher 2026/06/11(Thu) 17:21:13.49 ID:cHId6bP40
Whether it’s songs or lyrics, you can no longer tell where AI’s contribution ends and human contribution begins, can you?

The main culprit behind the decline of the Japanese music industry.

Author’s Comment: JASRAC is Japan’s biggest music copyright organization. It has a reputation for aggressively collecting licensing fees from all kinds of places whenever copyrighted music is used, so many people in Japan don’t have a very positive impression of it.
