Apprentice monk suspected of arson, dissatisfied with discipline and training volume; Main hall and priest’s quarters burned down in Saga.

Based on questioning of involved parties and investigation of security camera footage, police arrested Yoshikazu Morinaga (28), one of the apprentice monks who evacuated from the quarters, on suspicion of arson of an inhabited building early on the morning of July 6th.
During questioning, he admitted to the charges, stating, “I was sick of everything in my life.”
Morinaga had been training at the temple since April of last year and stated he was dissatisfied with the nature of the discipline and the volume of training, claiming, “Compared to other apprentices, I had more training like chanting sutras, and besides being scolded verbally, I was struck with a kyosaku (warning stick) and slapped in the face.”
