South Korea National Team Coach “Banned for Life” – Fury Boils Over After World Cup Debacle… Denied Entry to Restaurants and Buses, Even Death Threats Online
[June 29, KOREA WAVE] With South Korea’s elimination from the World Cup group stage confirmed, anger toward coach Hong Myung-bo has reached a boiling point. Death threats have appeared on online communities, and notices banning the coach from entering restaurants and cafes have been posted.
On the online community “Ilbe Store,” a post titled “I’ll take responsibility and kill Hong Myung-bo” was published on the afternoon of the 28th. The user identified himself as a 41-year-old born in 1986 and even included his name. He also wrote, “I have a wife and daughter.” The post has since been deleted.
As criticism mounts, restaurants, cafes, and convenience stores displaying “Hong Myung-bo Banned” signs have begun appearing. When news of the failure to reach the Round of 32 broke, a ramen shop owner in Jeju Island posted a photo on his SNS showing a sign on his door: “Coach Hong Myung-bo & Chung Mong-gyu, Banned for Life!”
A few days ago, images of a “Hong Myung-bo Banned” sign posted at the entrance of a convenience store went viral online. Photos of a city bus with a sign on the front door reading “Hong Myung-bo Banned from Boarding! No Entry!” also spread across the web.
On X (formerly Twitter), terms like “Group Stage Elimination,” “Failed to Advance,” “World Cup Elimination,” “Republic of Korea Elimination,” and “Team Hong Myung-bo” trended in real-time.
Police are reportedly monitoring the situation to prevent any sudden incidents when the team arrives at Incheon Airport, given the death threats circulating.
Meanwhile, regarding the failure to advance, citizens are criticizing the coach and the Korea Football Association more than the players themselves.
A 36-year-old man met near Olympic Park Station in Seoul said, “The players are top-tier, no worse than any others, but I think the problem lies with the establishment—the coach and the Football Association. The failure to advance might be disappointing for the players, but in the grand scheme of things, this is a chance to turn things around.”
A 22-year-old man who cheered for the Czech and Mexico matches at Gwanghwamun Square emphasized, “I stayed up from 6 AM to watch all the remaining potential matches, so I’m devastated that we failed to reach the Round of 32. The root problem is the Football Association, which chose an incompetent coach based on favoritism without professional review. The upper management who only care about their titles while collecting taxes are the real issue.”
A 26-year-old woman met near Olympic Park Station said, “Since the coach’s incompetence was exposed during the World Cup group stage, the failure to advance was a foregone conclusion. It’s a shame because I thought this was the new golden generation for Korean soccer, with veterans like Son Heung-min and Lee Jae-sung playing alongside young players like Oh Hyeon-gyu.”

It’s Korea, so it can’t be helped.
They’re a malicious, trashy nation that beats you to a pulp when you lose at international tournaments.

Even the President is bashing him, what’s up with that?
Following confirmation on the 28th that South Korea was eliminated from the World Cup North/Central American tournament in the first round, President Lee Jae-myung posted a scathing criticism of the coach and the Football Association on his X (Twitter) account. Media outlets are also reporting harshly, calling it “the worst performance in history.”
In his post, Lee expressed his disbelief, saying, “I am beyond bewildered by this unexpected result.” He criticized them by stating, “The outcome is obvious when you prioritize nepotism over ability and choose an incompetent person as commander.” He further pointed out problems in the personnel and organizational management of sports organizations like the Football Association, and requested the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism to thoroughly analyze the causes and implement measures to prevent recurrence.

I wonder if they’ll say “The outcome was obvious when you chose an incompetent person as commander” when the President quits and gets arrested.

If it’s just internet trolling, it’s pretty cringe, but are there actually shops banning him?

South Korean Presidents end up in prison after their terms end or if they mess up.
Their values are different from a country where the leader doesn’t have to take responsibility.

They took South Africa lightly and saved Son Heung-min, which was a huge mistake.

They just lost twice to underdogs in a group where they were guaranteed to advance, and didn’t make the knockout stage.
If this were Brazil or somewhere similar, his life would be in danger.

Death threats might happen in Japan too at a stretch, but having the country’s leader complain or shops banning him is just… not happening here.

I saw in a video that he was kicking chairs and yelling.
Thinking about that, Moriyasu is a great coach.
