[Trial] A 26-year-old father punched his 3-year-old eldest son in the abdomen while changing his diaper, rupturing his liver and causing him to die from blood loss. The father allegedly became enraged because “his son lied to him,” then falsely reported that the child had “fallen down the stairs.” He was in charge of childcare at home, yet stress reportedly built up and verbal abuse and violence became routine. Before 8:00 a.m., his wife left home for work. While changing the victim’s diaper, the defendant was told, “I didn’t poop in the diaper.” When feces that had in fact been in the diaper scattered onto the floor and other areas, he flew into a rage. He grabbed the victim’s right arm and punched him hard in the abdomen twice. As the child’s condition worsened, with his face gradually turning pale, the defendant called his wife and told her what had happened. He said, “He fell down the stairs.” His wife suggested calling the hospital, and he repeated the same false story there as well.
About three and a half hours after the incident, the child was taken to the hospital by ambulance and underwent surgery. However, because his liver had been almost completely split in two, the victim died from blood loss that evening.
