This many people die in Japan’s mountains every year.

2024
3,357 people involved in mountain accidents
300 dead or missing

2023
3,568 people involved in mountain accidents
335 dead or missing

2022
3,506 people involved in mountain accidents
327 dead or missing

The No. 1 cause of getting stranded is not falling, but getting lost.
Apparently around 300 people never come back every year.

Isn’t making this your hobby way too reckless?

Maybe I’ll go climb somewhere next week.

Even veterans apparently get stranded.

If someone in my family tried to make this a hobby, I’d absolutely stop them.
This and motorcycles.

You don’t even have a family, do you?

Mountain climbers cause way too much trouble for other people.

Well, it is dangerous, but most people are prepared for that, right?

That’s why mountain rescue insurance exists.

・The No. 1 cause of getting stranded is losing the trail
・Around 60% of the dead are age 60 or older
・Even low mountains see frequent accidents
・People die at almost a pace of one per day every year

A ropeway is good enough, honestly.

Mount Tomuraushi is a famous one, I guess.
A tour climb with 18 people.

Bad weather hit, and one after another they developed hypothermia.

8 people died.

It was a tour for experienced climbers.

Mount Tanigawa

More than 800 confirmed deaths from mountain accidents.

One of the world’s most notorious “man-killing mountains.”

The Mount Tomuraushi disaster (2009)

・July in Hokkaido
・15 climbing tour guests plus 3 guides
・The weather turned bad
・There was a chance to turn back
・But they kept going
・Strong wind and rain soaked them head to toe
・Hypothermia broke out one after another
・8 people died

Cause:
Apparently “It’s midsummer, so it’ll be fine” did not apply.

I saw a video about it too. Once hypothermia sets in from bad judgment, even the guides can no longer make proper decisions.

Why is it always weird shut-ins on the internet who don’t even climb mountains that desperately want to lecture everyone about how harsh climbing is?

Mount Fuji accident victims

2024
83 people

Up 62% compared to the five-year average

Even though it’s Japan’s most famous mountain, the number of people getting stranded is apparently surging.

Maybe more people are climbing it casually.

Two world-class Japanese climbers.

K2, the second-highest mountain in the world.

They slipped and fell while attempting an unclimbed route.

They were confirmed by helicopter, but rescue was impossible.

Both died.

That one was shocking.

People have gotten stranded on Mount Rokko and stuff too, right?

If you take weird routes or go in with gear that’s too casual, then yeah, of course.
On the flip side, even infamous Mount Tanigawa is basically a hike if you take the normal route.

I don’t want to climb mountains, but stories about climbers getting stranded are fascinating.

Complain after you’ve actually climbed a mountain.

Is hypothermia really that easy to get? This time of year, you can sleep in just your underwear and be fine.

It’s cold up in the mountains.

It’s like sitting in front of a fan while wearing wet clothes. You’ll catch a chill.

I’m slipping!!

Eventually, entering mountains outside developed campsites might get banned.

Mountain climbing is a hobby for old folks looking for a place to die.

There are a few mountain climbing manga out there, but I can never get into them because I just think, “Don’t do that in the first place.”

Cup Noodles taste amazing at the summit after you finish the climb.

I just binge-watched Yama no Susume and got really tempted to try mountain climbing.
If high school girls can climb, then Mount Fuji should be easy, right?

118 Name:Unknown Japuzz Watcher[] Posted: 26/06/13(Sat) 19:23:27 ID:GjKN
I think Tateyama is the most fun mountain to climb in Japan.
Even elementary school kids can easily get up to 3,015 meters, and Murodo has hotels, hot springs, beautiful lakes, alpine plants, and spring water from melting snow.
Mount Fuji is torture.

126 Name:Unknown Japuzz Watcher[] Posted: 26/06/13(Sat) 19:24:25 ID:XWsQ
But mountain climbing videos are pretty fun to watch.
People pitch tents on cliffs and stuff, things I’d absolutely never experience in my own life.

As a volunteer firefighter, I get pissed off every year because someone gets stranded in light clothing.

It’s funny when they tie themselves together with ropes, then one person slips and drags everyone else down too.

During a whiteout, it honestly might have gotten really bad.

Snow mountains are way too hardcore.

214 Name:Unknown Japuzz Watcher[] Posted: 26/06/13(Sat) 19:41:35 ID:F3YG
That unfunny story where the experienced leader gets lost and the whole group gets wiped out.

218 Name:Unknown Japuzz Watcher[] Posted: 26/06/13(Sat) 19:42:04 ID:r6d4
Seriously, why do people climb mountains?

219 Name:Unknown Japuzz Watcher[] Posted: 26/06/13(Sat) 19:42:09 ID:GjKN
When I got caught in a whiteout at a ski resort covered in fresh snow, I almost got stranded right near the rest house.

Climber: “Huh? There’s already a maintained, relatively safe route…? Then I’m taking the high-difficulty route!”

241 Name:Unknown Japuzz Watcher[] Posted: 26/06/13(Sat) 19:49:39 ID:XN2J
I get it if the place is easy, but why do people do the really hard ones?

242 Name:Unknown Japuzz Watcher[] Posted: 26/06/13(Sat) 19:51:00 ID:a2y9
Apparently Everest is so popular that people run out of oxygen and die while waiting in line.

249 Name:Unknown Japuzz Watcher[] Posted: 26/06/13(Sat) 19:53:56 ID:xko8
As someone who almost died just climbing a tiny lame mountain near my house, I think people who climb Mount Fuji are insane.

Author’s Comment:
In Japan, mountain rescue operations often involve public agencies funded by taxpayers. That’s one reason climbing accidents sometimes spark heated debates online, especially when rescuers must risk their own lives to save someone who got lost or underestimated the mountain.
