I’ll be the one changing.

My real maiden name is Kamimura.
It’s nice, just having “Kami” (god) in it makes it sound good.

6 Name: Unknown Japuzz Watcher[] Posted: 05/14/26(Thu) 01:59:54
That’s a common sentiment.

7 Name: Unknown Japuzz Watcher[] Posted: 05/14/26(Thu) 02:00:15
When you see your parents like that,
you sometimes think that way, right?

I know. My mom’s side got a slight upgrade.

11 Name: Unknown Japuzz Watcher[] Posted: 05/14/26(Thu) 02:01:47
It’s best to have a common surname and given name.

12 Name: Unknown Japuzz Watcher[] Posted: 05/14/26(Thu) 02:02:08

Even among common ones, I prefer cool-sounding ones.
Igarashi is more common than me, but it sounds cool.

I’m the one changing to my wife’s side.
Women are only interested in asserting their own rights, so they tend to make men with female surnames invisible, don’t they?

14 Name: Unknown Japuzz Watcher[] Posted: 05/14/26(Thu) 02:02:18
Mifune

20 Name: Unknown Japuzz Watcher[] Posted: 05/14/26(Thu) 02:04:01
Igarashi, Kazama, etc. I like wind-related names because they sound strong.

21 Name: Unknown Japuzz Watcher[] Posted: 05/14/26(Thu) 02:04:06
>>20
I agree.

22 Name: Unknown Japuzz Watcher[] Posted: 05/14/26(Thu) 02:04:07
When I hear Igarashi, I get an image of a muscular gay guy. Why is that? Like Sanbonmatsu, a hulking muscular image.

28 Name: Unknown Japuzz Watcher[] Posted: 05/14/26(Thu) 02:05:22
If it’s a “Kami” name, I prefer Kanzaki.

29 Name: Unknown Japuzz Watcher[] Posted: 05/14/26(Thu) 02:05:39
I had a classmate named Kamioka.

31 Name: Unknown Japuzz Watcher[] Posted: 05/14/26(Thu) 02:06:00
There was an Igarashi-san in the kendo club in middle school.
She had short hair and looked like a boy.
She’d probably be popular in a manga.

32 Name: Unknown Japuzz Watcher[] Posted: 05/14/26(Thu) 02:06:15
Rare surnames and given names are easily identifiable.
You can find them with one search.

33 Name: Unknown Japuzz Watcher[] Posted: 05/14/26(Thu) 02:06:39
Kanzaki gives me an image of a slender, blonde, beautiful boy who is also a yankee and a strong fighter.

35 Name: Unknown Japuzz Watcher[] Posted: 05/14/26(Thu) 02:07:12
I remember that Kanzaki-san.

36 Name: Unknown Japuzz Watcher[] Posted: 05/14/26(Thu) 02:07:32
Names like Kotoyori, Saotome, or anything ending in -in sound like they belong in an otome game. It’s better to have a cool-sounding name that sounds like it belongs in everyday life rather than one that’s too fancy.

39 Name: Unknown Japuzz Watcher[] Posted: 05/14/26(Thu) 02:08:05
>>36
I agree. Kamiya or Igarashi, for example.

40 Name: Unknown Japuzz Watcher[] Posted: 05/14/26(Thu) 02:08:24
My mom’s classmate was apparently named “Hyakume-ki” (Hundred-Eyed Demon).
It sounds cool.

42 Name: Unknown Japuzz Watcher[] Posted: 05/14/26(Thu) 02:08:51
>>40
It stimulates the chuunibyou in me. So cool.

43 Name: Unknown Japuzz Watcher[] Posted: 05/14/26(Thu) 02:09:04
There was a guy named Sakuraba who looked like Mamoru Oshii.
His name didn’t live up to his appearance.

44 Name: Unknown Japuzz Watcher[] Posted: 05/14/26(Thu) 02:09:40
>>43
Mamoru Oshii LOL.

45 Name: Unknown Japuzz Watcher[] Posted: 05/14/26(Thu) 02:09:55
My parents are in an international marriage, so our surnames are different.
That’s why the idea of changing surnames upon marriage still doesn’t quite click with me.

46 Name: Unknown Japuzz Watcher[] Posted: 05/14/26(Thu) 02:10:25
>>45
In that case, what happens to your surname?

49 Name: Unknown Japuzz Watcher[] Posted: 05/14/26(Thu) 02:10:48
>>46
I have both.
In Japan, I use my Japanese surname, and over there, I use their surname.

53 Name: Unknown Japuzz Watcher[] Posted: 05/14/26(Thu) 02:12:10
>>49
What do you go by in countries where your parents aren’t related by marriage?

56 Name: Unknown Japuzz Watcher[] Posted: 05/14/26(Thu) 02:14:00
>>53
My Japanese one.
I use my Japanese passport too.

47 Name: Unknown Japuzz Watcher[] Posted: 05/14/26(Thu) 02:10:26
I’m fine with separate surnames.
Women grow up knowing they’ll eventually change their name after marriage, so they’re prepared for it, but for men, we assume we’ll keep the same name until we die, so our brains short-circuit.

48 Name: Unknown Japuzz Watcher[] Posted: 05/14/26(Thu) 02:10:48
Will surnames disappear?

58 Name: Unknown Japuzz Watcher[] Posted: 05/14/26(Thu) 02:14:40
I’d like a surname with wind or water attributes.

59 Name: Unknown Japuzz Watcher[] Posted: 05/14/26(Thu) 02:14:42
The person I dated in school was named “Shiragami”.
If we had gotten married, I would have definitely taken their surname.

60 Name: Unknown Japuzz Watcher[] Posted: 05/14/26(Thu) 02:15:00
If the other person has a rare surname, it might be a dilemma.

65 Name: Unknown Japuzz Watcher[] Posted: 05/14/26(Thu) 02:17:05
Ogasawara is also cool.
My friend’s mom’s maiden name was Ogasawara, so I used to call her by that name.

66 Name: Unknown Japuzz Watcher[] Posted: 05/14/26(Thu) 02:18:10
Ogasawara is cool, but in my case, my given name also has three kanji, so it gets long.

67 Name: Unknown Japuzz Watcher[] Posted: 05/14/26(Thu) 02:18:44
>>66
So that’s a thing…

71 Name: Unknown Japuzz Watcher[] Posted: 05/14/26(Thu) 02:21:36
When I first learned about the system of changing surnames upon marriage, I thought only women changed their names.

72 Name: Unknown Japuzz Watcher[] Posted: 05/14/26(Thu) 02:22:53
If it was Akishinonomiya, I might actually change it.

73 Name: Unknown Japuzz Watcher[] Posted: 05/14/26(Thu) 02:23:02
I’d hate it if it was something like Shibasaki.

78 Name: Unknown Japuzz Watcher[] Posted: 05/14/26(Thu) 02:31:18
No matter what surname the other person has, I might want to change to their surname.
I have a strong desire to leave my past behind.

79 Name: Unknown Japuzz Watcher[] Posted: 05/14/26(Thu) 02:32:18

Sounds a bit dark.

81 Name: Unknown Japuzz Watcher[] Posted: 05/14/26(Thu) 02:32:45
What do people named “XX-ken-san” do when marrying someone from Tochigi or Gunma?

82 Name: Unknown Japuzz Watcher[] Posted: 05/14/26(Thu) 02:33:48
>>81
Give examples like Yamaguchi or Ishikawa.

84 Name: Unknown Japuzz Watcher[] Posted: 05/14/26(Thu) 02:34:37
My parents are in a婿養子 (mukoyoshi – adopted son-in-law) situation, so I have no preconceptions.
I want to choose a surname I like.

87 Name: Unknown Japuzz Watcher[] Posted: 05/14/26(Thu) 02:37:49
I saw a celebrity talk about how they wanted a cute surname and looked for a partner based on their surname, then got married. It surprised me that there are such ways of marrying.

88 Name: Unknown Japuzz Watcher[] Posted: 05/14/26(Thu) 02:40:28
In some countries overseas, you can use two surnames.
Long names sound cool, and I’m a little envious.

93 Name: Unknown Japuzz Watcher[] Posted: 05/14/26(Thu) 02:46:39
There’s a guy whose surname ended with the same character as the first character of his given name, and his wife didn’t like it, so he became a mukoyoshi (adopted son-in-law).

96 Name: Unknown Japuzz Watcher[] Posted: 05/14/26(Thu) 02:49:18
There’s a kid with the surname Saruwatari, and I thought it was cool like the author of Tough.

108 Name: Unknown Japuzz Watcher[] Posted: 05/14/26(Thu) 04:36:54
Actually, the surname is the most important thing when getting married.
Even if you divorce, you can keep your wife’s surname.
