“Kosen” refers to Japan’s National Institute of Technology system: a five-year technical college route where students start learning engineering and other practical STEM fields from a young age.
In reality, many Kosen graduates become highly capable workers, especially in manufacturing and engineering. Still, in Japanese society, people from ordinary universities with fancy names are often valued more, even when they are less useful on the job.
That gap between real ability and social branding is why this kind of topic appears online from time to time.
